The November 2016 issue of Harper’s BAZAAR features real women in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s that prove style is ageless. Janis Jones of Greenwich, Connecticut, is Harper’s BAZAAR’s choice for a reader that is “Fabulous at every age” and won for women in their 60’s. Janis, at age 60, is a Wall Street veteran, cancer survivor, mother and fiction writer. She entered the reader challenge this spring via her Instagram account @originaltrophywife for the #FabAtEveryAgeContest with her inspiring post and photo that read:
Why Am I Fabulous? Because I've learned that serious challenges and setbacks don't have to destroy beauty. Five years ago, I was diagnosed with Stage III Triple-negative breast cancer. I was given only 50/50 odds of survival. Surgery altered my form. Radiation depleted my energy. Intense chemotherapy took my hair, my eyebrows and my eyelashes, twice. I learned through this difficult process, one so many women have to go through, that a woman can emerge more beautiful than ever because she has learned how to flex her strength. By being strong, a woman can inspire all those around her to be their most fabulous selves. Through our efforts together and the great work of my team of doctors and therapists at The Evelyn Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering, I've come to know that even when life seems unbearably tough, your soul and body can still be amazing. This year I turned 60...and to me that's simply fabulous!#fabateveryagecontest #fabateveryage #hapersbazaar #bcrf @esteelauder #fabateveryage @saks at fabateveryage.com #originaltrophywife @harpersBAZAARus
Harper’s BAZAAR’s sixth annual Fabulous At Every Age Reader Search looks globally for women at every age who personify all things fabulous—think chic style, inspired beauty, and a passion for life. Harper’s BAZAAR editors selected five finalists, each representing a decade ranging from 20s to 60+, to attend a VIP awards celebration in New York City sponsored by Estee Lauder in partnership with Saks Fifth Avenue and Theory, which was the exclusive partner in dressing the finalists at the Surrey Hotel in New York City. Each of the winners have their photograph in the November 2016 issue of BAZAAR and received $5,000 each.
The five Fabulous at Every Age winners are: Janis Jones, age 60; Dr. Pamela Rama-de Padua, age 53; Ashley Maynard, age 43; Camelia Lopez Shoemaker, age 38; and Damisola Balogun, age 20. Janis Jones’ photo spread includes her fashion and beauty inspirations and states:
- Sum up your stye in three words: Dose of Glamour
- Go-to Designers: Michael Kors, The Row, Akris Punto
- Style Icon: Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen. Love the way they layer and always add a vintage find!
- Beauty Icon: Adrienne Vittadini. She epitomizes women of age who know how to look stunning.
How your age affects your look: Since entering my 60’s, I have come to rely on accessories to keep my look updated and impactful. Minimalist dressing was fine when I was younger, but now I try to create a focal point to my dressing. I always add a dash of shine before I leave the house. I think accessories are a beacon for women in their 60’s. Jewelry, scarves and handbags all add interest to my look. I love to stack chunky bracelets a la Celine or Armani. I also find that I need a touch of light around my face. Pearl or crystal earrings are the elements I use to highlight my cheekbones and my smile. I really depend on a good hair trim regularly and color, every eight weeks. It’s so important for women at my stage to be vigilant about staying well-groomed. I drink more water than I used to. Water helps make my skin stay fresh-looking. Since entering my 60’s, I’ve ramped up my skin care routine by adding a serum, an eye cream and by using a tinted moisturizer with SPF, daily. I’ve also found that I need to exfoliate in order to bring up that once natural radiance in my skin. I’ve started to get regular facials, something I never did. Finally, aging and having had a serious medical condition has actually helped me compare myself to others less. I’ve learned to appreciate and revel in my own uniqueness. By feeling confident in my style, I’m now able to reach out without distraction and embrace the people around me. Aging has it’s challenges for certain, but isn’t all that bad!
“We received so many inspiring entries from women of all ages,” said Alexandra Parnass, Beauty director of Harper’s BAZAAR. “We are happy to spotlight our finalists and celebrate their great style and beauty, both inside and out.”
“Distinctive style transcends age,” stated Tracy Margolies, chief merchant, Saks Fifth Avenue. “Saks Fifth Avenue is proud to support an initiative which celebrates women who defy the sartorial norms of fashion and age, without compromise. Style is timeless and we couldn’t be happier to honor the Fabulous at Every Age reader search’s beautiful winners.”
Janis Jones splits her time between Greenwich, Connecticut, and Palm Beach, Florida. She uses the Instagram moniker @originaltrophywife as that is the title of her novel in progress, inspired by her fascinating life spent on the Formula One Grand Prix racing circuit during the late 1970’s.
