“Haley is so much more than a tutor, she’s a friend.  She is funny and easy to talk to.”  This is how Sydney describes her Role Model Mentor.

Sydney and Haley have worked together for over a year.  They have developed a relationship that is part tutor and part mentor.  Haley’s main focus with Sydney is math but they have other common interests like sports.  This not only helped break the ice, but helped nurture their friendship.  Following their sessions they often go on walks, chit chatting about their respective teams, school and whatever else is going on in their busy lives.

“I look forward to my sessions with Haley.  She has helped me improve my math skills but I think the most important thing she taught me is that it is OK to ask for help.  Everyone needs help sometimes.”

Seeing these two together it is very clear they have a great rapport.  Haley is clearly at ease in the mentoring role and says she has learned to become a better teacher and enjoys being able to help.  She especially loves passing along her love of math.

Role Model Mentors matches outstanding high school students with elementary and middle school students, based on shared interests and specific needs. In their weekly mentoring sessions, mentors offer younger kids a positive influence and a uniquely-tailored combination of activities. This might be study skills and sports, math practice and music practice or homework help combined with time for makers’ hobbies like robotics, art or baking.
