Master Police Officer Philip L. Carriero
 June 1990 ~ March 2016

Chief of Police James Heavey announced the retirement of Master Police Officer (MPO) Philip Carriero who was sworn in as a Greenwich Police Officer on June 4, 1990. He graduated from the 225th Class of the Connecticut Municipal Police Training Council’s Basic Police Academy.

MPO Carriero’s assignments included the Patrol Division, the Traffic Section and the Dispatch Center. Prior to becoming a sworn officer, MPO Carriero served the Town of Greenwich as a Public Safety Dispatcher for three years. As an Accident Car Investigator, he was called upon to investigate some of our most serious motor vehicle accidents. As a Field Training Officer, he oversaw the initial field training of police academy graduates. MPO Carriero distinguished himself as a highly competent and able police officer and was promoted to Master Police Officer in 2009.

MPO Carriero received numerous commendations for excellent police work in the apprehension of wanted criminals which exemplified the finest tradition of police service. These actions were exhibited in many diverse incidents over the years ranging from mundane cases such as shoplifting to perilous ones such as armed robberies. The commendations often reflected upon MPO Carriero’s ability to act in a “professional and composed manner in extremely stressful situations.”

MPO Carriero has been recognized by the Chief of Police as the Officer of the Month on two occasions. In January 2009 he was recognized for his efforts in a CPR resuscitation which involved a difficult extrication of the patient and again in March 2014 for yet another CPR resuscitation.

MPO Carriero’s attention to detail and work ethic has been exemplified in numerous cases, many of which have been recognized by other governmental agencies. The CT Department of Labor has recognized MPO Carrerio for his superb documentation at worksite accidents.

An area of exceptional distinction is MPO Carriero’s dedication to keeping the roads of Greenwich safe. Throughout his career MPO Carriero has been absolutely tenacious in the enforcement of Motor Vehicle Laws, especially in the specialized area of commercial trucking. His untiring efforts garnered him a reputation as thoroughly dedicated to safety on the roadway.

“Phil’s is a highly prolific and accomplished patrol officer, and he earned the rank of Master Police Officer. Phil dedicated himself so thoroughly to traffic regulations that his mastery of the complexities of truck law made him a GPD in-house truck expert. If Phil didn’t have the answer in his head, he was able to research it quickly and thoroughly. We are fortunate that Phil will continue to serve the town as a Special Police Officer. I wish him all the best and May The Road Rise Up To Meet You…….. James Heavey Chief of Police
