In an effort to instill the love of sports within children who might not have access to quality equipment, a group of Greenwich High School students recently outfitted kids connected with Family Centers’ Community and Supportive Services program with used sports gear.
The students are part of the school’s Youth Equipment Sharing (YES) program, which collects used sporting equipment and donates it to children and families in need. Organized by juniors Brian Fagella, Greg Goldstein and Romano Orlando, the YES program sanitizes all equipment so that it can be immediately used by recipients. In only its second year, the club collected more than 2,500 items.
My favorite part of the process is going to the places in which we donate the equipment,” said Orlando, one of club’s three presidents. “It’s great to see our hard work pay off, and it feels even better to make a positive difference in our community.”
Family Centers’ Community and Supportive Services Program is a partnership with Charter Oak Communities, and provides onsite goal planning, vocational support and overall self-sufficiency counseling at Stamford Public Housing communities. The goal is to empower public housing residents to become active members and leaders within their communities through the socialization, support and encouragement services offered by Resident Services Coordinators.
